Het graafschap en vervolgens hertogdom Luxemburg bereikte zijn hoogtepunt in de 13de en 14de eeuw, toen de vorsten ervan de titel keizer van het Heilige Germaanse Rijk werd toebedeeld. In dat tijdperk omvatte het hertogdom Luxemburg de middeleeuwse heerlijkheid van Burg-Reuland. Destijds is het kasteel waarschijnlijk gebouwd om het hoofd te bieden aan de verwoestende invallen van de Noormannen (9de eeuw) en Hongaren (10de eeuw). Het totaal aan vestingwerken heeft in de loop der eeuwen wijzigingen ondergaan om het vooral aan te passen aan de verdediging tegen vuurwapens (15de eeuw), maar werd in de loop van de 18de eeuw door Franse Troepen verwoest. Bij recente restauraties is vooral het aspect van het middeleeuwse kasteel met zijn dikke muren en imponerende torens hersteld. Openingsperiode:

The county and afterwards duchy Luxembourg reached its peak in 13° and 14° centuries, when the monarchs of it, the title “emperor of saint Germanic realm” was allocated. In that era included duchy Luxembourg the medieval magnificence of Burg-Reuland. Then the castle has been probably built to withstand the devastating irruptions of the Vikings (9th century) and Hungarian (10th century). Total to fortifications has in course of the centuries modifications undergo to adapt it especially to maintaining against fire weapons (15° centuries), but in course of the 18° centuries by French troops it was devastated. At recent restorations the aspect of the medieval castle with its thick walls and impressing towers has especially repaired.
