This former Roman castle from the 13th century is named after knight Gheeraert van Ghent, nicknamed the Devil. Of the 13de-centurial construction from Doornikse limestone, only are kept still the east wing and the donjon. From the 14d century this castle was property of the city. Since start 20th century the National archives is here established. Only the reading hall is to visit for consultation of the archives.
