In 1215,dean Adolphus of the Chapter of Tongeren donated the field of Hardelingen to the Chapter in freehold possession. Of old the trusteeship concerning Hardelingen was wielded by the lords of Werm. Hardelingen was the object in the 14° centuries of an embittered fight between the Chapter of Tongeren and its custodian at that time, Louis the Marteal, also lord of Werm. in 1798,Hardelingen was sold by the revolutionairy and came this way as black goods in the hands of the family de Schaetzen of Tongeren. The current castle of Hardelingen is still a remainder of the old domain-farmstead, which was thoroughly rebuilt in the 19° centuries, and has been lain in a wide English park.
