The bases of this bldg. indicate that the Herkenrode mill is one of the oldest bldg. of the abbey. Already in a charter of 1233 the mill is mentionned. A large part of the water mill went up in flames in 1824.The ruïne of the mill became in 1836 rebuilt. Until the end of the sixties, the mill was still used to grind grain. In 1980, a part of the mill collapsed.The bldg. was supported and the watercourse of the Demer was diverted. In 1999, plans were made to repair the water mill and generate electricity with it. In September 1999 the roof collapsed entirely
