The citadel of Herzele stands as a symbol for the magnificence ' Hersele ', one of the most important manors of the ' Country Of Aelst '. The lords of Herzele were considered as a distinguished line which inhabited the water castle. Age-long the manor Herzele was controlled from this domain. Supposedly the establishment date situates himself beginning 7th century. The bldg. was rather primitive. It existed from wood and braid with earth dams and was surrounded by water. End 11th century replaced Franco, lord of Herzele, the wooden construction by a stone water citadel. In 1384 Mr Seger, the Lord of the castle at that time, supported an insurrection against the Earl of Flanders; the castle was devastated.
The citadel was rebuilt, but in 1579, and this time definitively, was destroyed by Spanish army troops. For 400 years the ruïne was orphaned left behind. In 1972, restoration works, to which one let rise again one tower in its full glory, started and brought the complete ground plan in picture.
