The origin of Het Steen returns up to the middle ages. Het Steen has probably grown from a wooden watchtower on a motte. Acquaintance occupants of Het Steen were among others Maria-Kristina van Egmont, daughter of the earl of Egmont who on 5 June 1568 was decapitated on the Large Market at Brussels, and Pieter Paul Rubens, which established himself in 1635 on Het Steen.
