The Hoolstmolen become for the first time mentioned in a alderman certificate from 1289 where the border is fixed between the municipalities Balen and Meerhout. From other documents becomes clear, which this mill (as well as the water mill of Scheps) was a ban mill, i.e. that the surrounding farms were obliged to let their grain grind on this mill. As from the middle ages up to approximately 1780 the history of Hoolstmolen is rather dark. However, as from 1472 the successive owners and lopsiders have been reasonably well known. In 1565 the mill is destroyed by a fire . He is however set up again before 1573. In 1812, is the Hoolstmolen for half property of the Norbertinessen-monastery of Herentals and for other half of the governing board of te poor of Balen. In the period l800-1861 the mill is successively leased to several millers who however, seen the less good pace of matter, never ground the mill for longer periods .
