The field Potegem is already mentioned in second half of the 10th century, under the denomination Potingehem or Pottingehem. It have been initially a reinforced citadel . In Flandria Illustrata (1644), Sanderus describes it as a habitable, beautiful and pleasant lord house. Approx. 1260-1270, Potegem disappear from the possession of the Saint- Pieters abbey. In the 16° centuries, when the Spaniards dominated in our regions,Walter van Potegem, third earl of the lusciousness of Ingelmunster, inhabited the castle. In 1830, the year of the Belgian independence, Ivo and Julie Van Robaeys set up an exclusive boy boarding school in the castle of Potegem . The O.C.M.W. sell the castle in 1930, to Robert Vindevogel. He gives architect Viérin the task to restore the castle entirely . After the first world war the castle was rebuilt on its old founds. The castle, which is now inhabited by the family Devos, has been surrounded by a nicely park, with among other things a pond and rosery.
