When the first bricks were laid, one can no longer retrieve. The first images of the castle date from first half of the 16° centuries, but the round donjon towers on the East side and the double moat with gateway bldg. betray clearly an older medieval, feudal water citadel. Worth mentioning is also that earl Bernadotte, marshal in the army of Napoleon and the later founder of the Swedish royal house , during the siege of Maastricht in 1794, chose the castle of Leut as residence.
