The former water castle of the lords of Stevoort, now Mariaburcht, will have already existed in the 11° centuries. It was a reinforced citadel with a drawbridge. The oldest well-known owner is Arnold van Steynvoorde, who was in 1364 suzerain of the earl of Loon. In the 16de centuries it came in the possession of the family Salm- the Rougraeve. In 1710, the family Liboton became the new owner and these rebuilt the complete castle. On the drawbridge is indicated the date (1769) of the construction of the current castle. In 1826, the castle was sold to the family Palmers de Terlaenen.In 1922 bought the province the castle and aimed a house keeping school which was controlled by the sisters of Berlaer.Later in 1925, became the castle their property.
