Het vroegere waterkasteel van de Heren van Stevoort, nu Mariaburcht, zou reeds in de 11de eeuw bestaan hebben .Het was een versterkte burcht met een ophaalbrug.
De oudst bekende eigenaar is Arnold van Steynvoorde, die in 1364 leenheer was van de Graaf van Loon. In de 16de eeuw kwam het goed in het bezit van de familie Salm- De Rougraeve.
In 1710 werd de familie Liboton de nieuwe eigenaar en deze verbouwde het volledige kasteel.
Op de ophaalbrug staat de datum vermeld (1769) van de bouw van het huidig kasteel.In 1826 werd het kasteel verkocht aan de familie Palmers de Terlaenen.In 1922 kocht de provincie het kasteel en richtte er een huishoudschool op die bestuurd werd door de Zusters van Berlaer.Later in 1925 werd het kasteel hun eigendom.

The former water castle of the lords of Stevoort, now Mariaburcht, will have already existed in the 11° centuries. It was a reinforced citadel with a drawbridge.
The oldest well-known owner is Arnold van Steynvoorde, who was in 1364 suzerain of the earl of Loon. In the 16de centuries it came in the possession of the family Salm- the Rougraeve.
In 1710, the family Liboton became the new owner and these rebuilt the complete castle.
On the drawbridge is indicated the date (1769) of the construction of the current castle. In 1826, the castle was sold to the family Palmers de Terlaenen.In 1922 bought the province the castle and aimed a house keeping school which was controlled by the sisters of Berlaer.Later in 1925, became the castle their property.
