Located to the junction of the Molignée and the Flavion, on top of a steep rock, the castle of Montaigle was at the end of the Roman settlement, during the Late Roman empire (± 3rd up to 5th century) a garrison place. The blockhouse was set up at the beginning of the 14° centuries on a parent bldg. by the family of Dampierre, concerning then dominating the county Namen . This was part of the portion of the inheritance of the youngest son of Gwijde van Dampierre, Gwijde of Namen, also regent of Flanders, prominent character at the well-known Guldensporenslag (1302). In the 15° centuries the fortress was rebuilt to a comfortable stay with additional floors and cellars, large windows, chimneys and toilets... What now is still visible, descends mainly from that period, but the attentive visitors can discover also here and there tracks of the former bldg.: archer windows, closed loopholes; thickened and afterwards raised walls; difference at the side bricks; etc....
