In Meetkerke the large polder mill, is the only brick windmill with a scoop wheel in Flanders. This mill has a long history. Around 1622 one started with the drainage of the low Moere in Meetkerke, in imitation of the draining of the Moeren at Veurne. Around the area one raised the Moerdijck. On the Langsgracht came two wooden wind mills with scoop wheels which pumped the water in the Blankenbergse canal The smallest mill was demolished in 1808. The largest were replaced in 1811, by a brick wind mill: the large polder mill. This mill at the Kapellebrug in Meetkerke remained functioning until 1903. Afterwards became the task of the polder mills taken over by a diesel pump. The large polder mill has been unique in Flanders and has been protected since 1942 . This wind mill with scoop wheel is restored with resources of the province WestFlanders.
