Connecting on the Muggenbergpark surrounds the Ter Elstpark the protected (1973) castle ruins Ter Elst. This castle belongs - according to some authors - to one of the oldest bldg. of the province, of which the origin returns up to in the distant middle ages. In the course of years developed to a splendid park, where regularly high guests stayed, under whom incl Margaretha of York and Philips IV. Since the 17° centuries in use as parsonage, had become the castle in 1799, distrained and sold as black goods. In 1914, the castle with the years devastates partially would be on the decline to ruins. In 1972, it was bought by the municipality, and it was restored partially. Meanwhile it has been protected as castle ruins.
