Aansluitend op het Muggenbergpark omgeeft het Ter Elstpark de beschermde (1973) kasteelruïne Ter Elst. Dit kasteel behoort - aldus sommige auteurs - tot een der oudste gebouwen van de provincie, waarvan de oorsprong teruggaat tot in de verre middeleeuwen. In de loop der jaren uitgebouwd tot een prachtige warande, verbleven er regelmatig hoge gasten, onder wie o.m. Margaretha van York en Filips De Schone. Sedert de 17de eeuw in gebruik als pastorie, werd het kasteel in 1799 aangeslagen en verkocht als “zwart goed”. In 1914 gedeeltelijk verwoest, zou het kasteel met de jaren aftakelen tot een ruïne. In 1972 werd het aangekocht door de gemeente, en werd het gedeeltelijk gerestaureerd. Inmiddels is het beschermd als kasteelruïne. |

Connecting on the Muggenbergpark surrounds the Ter Elstpark the protected (1973) castle ruins Ter Elst. This castle belongs - according to some authors - to one of the oldest bldg. of the province, of which the origin returns up to in the distant middle ages. In the course of years developed to a splendid park, where regularly high guests stayed, under whom incl Margaretha of York and Philips IV. Since the 17° centuries in use as parsonage, had become the castle in 1799, distrained and sold as black goods. In 1914, the castle with the years devastates partially would be on the decline to ruins. In 1972, it was bought by the municipality, and it was restored partially. Meanwhile it has been protected as castle ruins. |
