For the first time in written sources, in 1572 the castle of Meldert is mentioned, but possibly stood here former already a castle. Around 1845 it was demolished on the initiative of countess Vander Noot which let built the current neogotic castle in place. The field was bought in 1957, by the Chaplains of Labour which arranged there the college of Saint- Jan that today still exists. The castle, the service wing and the garden pavilion got a protection in 1993, as a monument. The park area, which developed into a splendid nature forest, was protected as a rural face and partially managed as a conservancy area.
