The citadel was built in the 11 centuries by the Flemish earl. It was converted repeatedly, was destroyed and was rebuilt. In 1811, Napoleon let demolish the castle-ruïne, where a couple of the oldest turrets and some wall parts remained. In 1826, banker J.P. Mathieu from Brussels bought the complete domain from the House of Oranje. The front wing were rebuilt. To the medieval part an entrance port with drawbridge was added. In the water part of the castle, the right side is the private-residence of the family Mathieu , whereas the museum reminds, to characters and events from the history of the castle. The entrance of the castle lies in the Fonteinpad, the lane left of the field. In the same lane you will see a chapel and a ice-cellar on the left. This is a castle you certain have to visit. In a pleasant manner you get acquainted with the history of Belgium. There are several scenes mounted to make it all more visual. There is also a cheese museum on the domain. After your visit you can still take a walk in the castle field
